Creating a Scholarship  Portfolio/ Binder

Many granting organizations offer scholarships, bursaries and awards to students. Have you ever thought about applying for a scholarship, but was not sure where to begin? Our goal is to help you successfully apply for scholarships, bursaries and awards that are available.

Don't Delay.

If you know you need financial aid for post secondary, start researching scholarships now. Scholarship application packets can take some time to put together. The sooner you start, the sooner you finish.

Follow the rules.

Make sure you read through the requirements of the scholarship very carefully.

  • Pay attention to GPA.

Keep it organized

Many Scholarships will need various documents including:

  • A recent copy of your transcript.

  • Essays outlining career goals, education plans, community service and why you should be chosen for a particular scholarship.

  • Up-to-date Resume. If you require help with getting your resume together, Ms. Devaney or Ms. Kermode in the Career Centre in the Library are available to assist you.

  • List of awards received, volunteer activities and extracurricular activities you have been involved with.

  • Contact information of individuals whom you could ask for a letter of reference.

Check all documentation

Once you have all of the documents you need, check them over very carefully against the application's requirements. If you are submitting an essay, it is a good practice to re-read it and ask someone else to read it as well.

Get your paperwork in on-time

Getting your application in early does not guarantee you will receive the scholarship. However, being prepared and paying attention to the application deadline will alleviate any stress you might feel by trying to put together a good application.

Make copies.

Copy  all documents submitted and keep a list of scholarships you applied for; it will be easier to follow-up on your application status.

Prepare thank you notes

If you are awarded Scholarship, you are required to write a thank you note to the donor. This provides the donors with information about your successes and lets them know how valuable their support is.
